The Unexpected
Unexplained events happen when you least expect them. Once they've happened, you are often left asking yourself "what if?" and you wonder what you could have done, rather than what you actually did.
I can't really say that last month my life had significantly changed, but there was one event in particular that gave me a change of mind. I am left with a memory that will never cease to exist.
I was caught off guard with what had happened, and I am still left wondering just what exactly had happened.
It was the weekend, and I had no plans for the evening. My friend Tiffanie had asked me if I wanted to meet her at the mall later that day to which I replied with a "yes". My other friend Carson had actually been wanting to see me that same weekend and I figured "why not see them both?"
A couple of hours passed by and I had finally left to go to the mall. Our plan was to meet around five. Tiffanie was late, but Carson was actually about 45 minutes early. As soon as I saw him I walked over to him and we entered the mall. We decided to wait for Tiffanie at the food court.
Not much happened while we waited for Tiffanie. As soon as she arrived we got up and walked around the mall for an hour or so, until we became hungry.
I had an immense craving for pizza and a sundae, which was exactly what I ended up ordering. Tiffanie ended up ordering food as well, but Carson claimed he wasn't hungry. After about 20 minutes, Carson decided he was going to order a Mcflurry at Mcdonalds and he walked away.
Even from the other end of the food court, I could tell Mcdonalds had a long line and that he was going to be waiting a while.
About 10 minutes had passed by and Carson still hadn't come back, and suddenly something unexpected happened.
Tiffanie and I were deep into conversation until we heard a very loud noise. It sounded as if someone had aggressively knocked over a table and a chair. We both looked over and in a matter of seconds the entire food court turned into complete chaos.
There was so much going on I couldn't figure out what was happening. Parents were running away with their children and groups of people were arguing, Security guards had dashed after someone, and someone else had appeared to smuggle something in his jacket while running away.
I heard screams all around me. For a second I thought I was in the middle of a mass shooting, and my adrenaline spiked. My heart was pounding and Tiffanie and I both wondered where Carson was.
We immediately ran over to Mcdonalds to see Carson casually holding a Mcflurry. He wasn't worried at all, and while everything started to simmer down, I was still shaken from what had happened.
I urged my friends to leave the food court with me, in case of something happening again, but with deadly consequences.
Although I still don't know what had happened, I'll never forget how I felt in that moment. The possibility that I could have had a brush with death leaves me dumbfounded.
